1. I found this photograph off of the photo sharing website of flickr.
2. The photographer is unknown.
3. The date it was taken is also unknown but it was uploaded onto flickr on March 16, 2010.
4. I like the pure happiness of this picture. I really like the dull colors with a little splash of red found in the flower and lipstick. I just really like the overall look that this photograph exudes.
I am rather in to fashion and i like her scarf and jacket. I also have an obsession with matching and as i mentioned early the red in the flower and in the backpack in the background matches the red of her lipstick and the color of her scarf kind of matches the highlights in her hair. This creates a repetition making the photograph cohesive. I also like the contrast not necessarily with the values but thee fact that these dull, depressing colors are present in the photograph and then you see this beautiful and beaming girl.
5. I believe natural light was used to take this photograph because it looks to me as if this young lady is outside. The lighting however is not very bright at all which makes the picture have very little contrast, other than the splash of color in the flower and the lips. This subtle difference of values draws our eyes and creates emphasis on the flower in her hair and her face because it is the lights value through out the picture. We are especially drawn to her lips because they are red and also because she is smiling with her even whiter teeth.
6. There are many composition skills demonstrated in this photograph. Colors, values, hints, and shades, are used to create emphasis. I believe every picture has emphasis otherwise why would the picture be taken. So that is another skill used along with balance. As i mentioned before i am very meticulous about matching and the matching of the reds and the values create this balance. I also think rule of third relating to points of power was used because if you were to divide this photograph into thirds horizontally and vertically you would find that the woman's right eye falls on the intersection of two lines making us drawn to her facing which is another way emphasis is created. I said before that i liked how everything is dark in this picture but her face is so happy that she makes it light. I think this is an element of irony meaning that this photographer used values to create a feeling and to portray a message that is opposite of what you would think the message would be.
7. I believe that the photographer was trying to communicate that even in the darkest of situations there is hope there is light to be found like the light beaming from her face. I think this photograph is a good reminder to keep your chin high and to remember that things aren't always as bad as they seem if you keep a positive attitude. I think the photographer was successful in communicating this message because it is obvious to see the pure happiness in the midst of all this darkness. If the background would have been more in focus and more distracting i don't think the message would have been as clear.

This picture has to do with spacial relations. It was taken at the right angel and far enough away to make it looks as if the woman is pushing over the tree.

Pictures can demonstrate more than one visual dynamic. I already used this photograph for contrast but it also contains rules of thirds when talking about points of power. At the intersection in the bottom right hand corner lies the dogs nose and because it is stationed there the eye is drawn to the dogs face and particularly the nose. A feature that lies on a line rather than an intersection is the eye making the face another point of power.

This picture is one of my favorites. One of the challenging thing about capturing visual dynamics on film is find things that fit the criteria. Something as ordinary as a traffic sign can severe many purposes and in this case it frames the person standing underneath it.

The flower takes up two thirds of this picture while the grass takes up the other one third. This particular photograph is an example of the visual dynamic known as rule of thirds focusing on proportion.

Contrast is shown in this picture. The difference between the yellow lab and the dark couch creates a bit of drama to this otherwise peaceful scene. Also, the dark features of the dog, such as its eyes, nose, and paws, create contrast

This photograph is an example of leading lines. The eye is drawn by the railroad tracks to the emphasis which is the arch created by the trees. Pictures can exhibit more than one visual dynamics as in this picture the trees also create a frame.

1. I found this photograph off of flickr.

2. I could not find the photography of this picture.
3. The date when this photograph was taken could also not be found.

4. I really like this picture. There are so many of my favorite things incorporated. If I could be anywhere in the world I would be at the beach. My parents have always said that Iwill live somewhere warm because I love the sun so much. It makes me feel so warm and happy. The sun setting on a beach reminds me of some great vacations I have had with my family. The little girl in this picture reminds me a lot of myself which I also really like about this picture. There is nothing more relaxing and peaceful then walking on the beach and watching the sunset. This photograph captures this feeling beautifuly. I love the glossy reflection in the sand. You cant beat the feeling of sand inbetween your toes. The colors of the sunset is absolutly breath taking. When I was little I used to want to take a picture of every sunset, this one would be no exception. The colors just flow into each other again creating this over all feeling of peace and calmness. Another one of my favoirte things about this photograph is the essence of wind in the little girl's hair and dress. It makes the picture have movement and adds character.
5. The lighting used in this picture is natural sun light. The light is not very intense giving the photograph a subtle feeling and little contrast, the colors of the sunset just melt into eachother. If this picture would have been taken in broad dayight the overall feeling would not be as enchanting. Lighting has a great affect on the feeling of the picture. The natural light adds so much to this particualr photograph such as, warm colors and cool reflections. The sun is almost set not shining of a lot of rays but just enough rays to capture this beautiful picture.

6. This unown photographer used the composition skills of lines, color, and shape. There are so many lines in this picture. These include where the sand meets the water, where the water meets the sky, and the different colors in the sky. Also where the wave is crashing on the surface of the ocean creates another line. The shape present in this picture is the giant circle known as the sun. I also think the rays projecting from the sun create a upside orange triangle that is somewhat visible. The last element I have already explain. Colors are present throughout this picture from the orange and purple in the sky to the blue-ish gray visible in the water to the white of the crashing waves and the pink of the little girls dress. I believe this picture also contains the rule of thirds. The little girl lies directly on a vertical line and the crashing waves lies on a horizontal line. This picture is filled with compostion skills making it a great and intriguing photograph. I believe the emphasis created by the photographer is the little girl and I think the person who took this photo was sucessful in creating this emphasis because my eye is immediatly drawn to her. I believe this emphasis was created by her position and her dark shadow and composition compaired to the rest of picture.

7. I believe the photographer is trying to communicate the gracful haven a beach can be for people. It can be a place to think and get away from it all. For these photography blogs I have almost always chosen a picture of nature. That is because I absolutly love the organic beauty of it and I think there is few places more beautiful than the beach. I believe the photographer was trying to make a comparision between the huge ocean that goes on for miles and the little girl. Sometimes the ocean makes you think about the reality of the world and its immense size and the fact that you make up part of the world. I think the photogrpaher was sucessful in communicating their message because of how the picture is taken. The little girl looks big because she is closer to the camera, but if you look behind her the ocean looks like it goes on forever. The small sun in the background makes it even more clear that the ocean is big and that there are a lot bigger things in life than ourselves.

4/23/10

1. This photograph can be found on google images.

2. Shelton Muller took this picture.

3. I do not know exactly when the photograph was taken but Muller wrote a tutorial about it on January 24, 2007.

4. My favorite apect of this photograph is that it was taken in nature. I love the calmness of the water and the skies. It seems so organic. Nothing was planned to take this photograph, the scenary is beautiful just the way it is. I really like the depth of this photograph it seem that it goes on for miles. Another one of my favorite things is the reflection of the moutain in the calm lake. It makes the highest of peeks seem reachable because it is seen at the ground level. From the peek you see the clouds which give the feeling of movement throughout the picture. Overall I really like this photograph because of all its natural beauty.

5. Natural lighting is used in this photograph. It gives the piture high contrast because of the fact that in nature there are so many colors, some dark and some light which are emphasised by natural lighting. The overall feeling that the lighting gives the picture is subtle, even with the high contrast of hues. With any other lighting the message of the picture would not be as affective. If this picture where taken at high noon, the lighting would be more harsh and it would have taken the calmness out of the picture.

6. The emphasis of this photograph, I believe is the mountain. The photographer took this picture at an angle where the log in the lake points directly at the mountain drawing your eye there and creating emphasis, so the technique of using leading lines is captured in this photo. Another technique used is the sense of movement in the clouds. It makes the eye look way out in the distance which is another element called space, the illusion of depth or dimension. Space is used although it is not much of an illusion. This photograph probably does range over a large area, but with this element it make the photograph seem that it goes on for miles. As I mentioned before there are many different colors which really add to the overall composition of the photograph.

7. I think the photographer is trying to communicate the natural beauty found in nature. This relates to our last unit of Zen photography, which deals in the idea that beauty is found everywhere. How appropiate that today is earth day. This is a picture that shows the need to perserve the earth we live on. This photograph communicate the absolute escape of any stresses in your life. If you look far enough into the mountains in the distance you can almost feel like your in the picture. I think the message of this picture succesfully comes across when you view it that is probably why I like it so much.

Visual Dynamics

Visual dynamics is defined as the way the eye moves around a work of art when being viewed. The visual dynamic being used in this photograph is the rule of thirds in relation to points of power. Where the intersection of a horizontal and a vertical line meet on a photograph, when it is divided into thirds as visible on this picture, can be a point of power. In this particualr picture the building on top of the hill lies right on one of the horizontal lines and the middle of the building is where two lines intersect. Also where the stone path and stairs meets the grass occurs at a interection. These places of intersections don't have to be drawn for our eye to be drawn to them.

This picture is a great example of contrast. The background appears very light due to the natural sunlight used when taking this photograph. The small child on the swing looks very dark, creating a dramatic contrast between tints and shades. I feel without even seeing the child's face you can see the happiness and enjoyment partial because of similar experiences you might have had as a child.

This is a great example of rule of thids relating to the topic of proportion. As you notice by the grid lines this photogrph is broken into one/third empty space or background and two/thirds filled space. Another way tolook at this is one/third flower, one/third bee, and one/third background.

This photograph is an example of leading lines. The emphasis in this picture is created by all the colored pencils pointing to the open circle that the tips of the pencils make. These lines lead your eyes stright to the middle of the circle.

This picture is an example of framing. The natural gap in the rock frames the beautiful scenery around it. The framing creates emphasis by moving the eye to the background which is created by framinging of the rock.

04/08/10

1. I found this picture off of Flickr.

2. The photographer is Angie Nan.

3. I don't know exactly when the photograph was taken but I believe it was uploaded on March 22, 2010 making the photo recent to flickr.

4. I like the simplicity of this photograph. I feel that it correlates with the theme of the project we are working on, which is zen photography. The first time you see this glass and lime you may not see its beauty. Zen photography is all about stopping and smelling the roses. It is about seeing the beauty in things that are not neccessarily thought of as worthy of a photograph, until you take a deeper look. I also really like the light and transparency of the photograph. The light hues give a calm feeling. It is appropriate that the name of the photograph refers to summer because that is what it reminds me of, which I also like because it is one of my favorite seasons.

5. The lighting used for this photograph is natural sun light. Lighting contributes a lot to the over all feel of the picture. If darker or artifical light were to be used, it would make the photogrpah seem gloomy or commerical and the over all effect would not be as organic. The lighting gives the picture very low contrast. This low comparsion between light and dark is subtle, creating an overall feeling of relaxation. A photographer often looks for good lighting and this photograph was captured with good natural lighting.

6. There are many composition skills that can be applied to a photograph. The ones that are featured in this photograph include line, shape, and symmetry. Implied lines appear in this picture. Implied lines are created where the lime meets the glass and where the liquid limeonade ends. Also the difference of the boundries of the veins of the lime creates an implied line. A shape is also visbile in the picture, this shape is the circle of the slice of lime. The veins of the lime produce a balance symmetry which divides the lime into eighths. Another composition skill used is the idea of proportion and the rule of thirds. The center of the lime is a focal point and is near the intersection of the two rows in the upper right quadrants.

7. I think the photographer was trying to communicate the sweet simple pleasures of summer. The natural light eludeds to the shining sun in the summertime. I think it is clear to the observer what the photographer is trying to communicate. With the soft hues, warm light, and strong focus on the glass and lime its clear the organic nature of this photograph. There is little distraction in this picture. It is clear the focus is on the glass and the lime. This communicates the idea of few distractions during the summer, which makes the season relaxing and something to look forward to!
