04/08/10

1. I found this picture off of Flickr.

2. The photographer is Angie Nan.

3. I don't know exactly when the photograph was taken but I believe it was uploaded on March 22, 2010 making the photo recent to flickr.

4. I like the simplicity of this photograph. I feel that it correlates with the theme of the project we are working on, which is zen photography. The first time you see this glass and lime you may not see its beauty. Zen photography is all about stopping and smelling the roses. It is about seeing the beauty in things that are not neccessarily thought of as worthy of a photograph, until you take a deeper look. I also really like the light and transparency of the photograph. The light hues give a calm feeling. It is appropriate that the name of the photograph refers to summer because that is what it reminds me of, which I also like because it is one of my favorite seasons.

5. The lighting used for this photograph is natural sun light. Lighting contributes a lot to the over all feel of the picture. If darker or artifical light were to be used, it would make the photogrpah seem gloomy or commerical and the over all effect would not be as organic. The lighting gives the picture very low contrast. This low comparsion between light and dark is subtle, creating an overall feeling of relaxation. A photographer often looks for good lighting and this photograph was captured with good natural lighting.

6. There are many composition skills that can be applied to a photograph. The ones that are featured in this photograph include line, shape, and symmetry. Implied lines appear in this picture. Implied lines are created where the lime meets the glass and where the liquid limeonade ends. Also the difference of the boundries of the veins of the lime creates an implied line. A shape is also visbile in the picture, this shape is the circle of the slice of lime. The veins of the lime produce a balance symmetry which divides the lime into eighths. Another composition skill used is the idea of proportion and the rule of thirds. The center of the lime is a focal point and is near the intersection of the two rows in the upper right quadrants.

7. I think the photographer was trying to communicate the sweet simple pleasures of summer. The natural light eludeds to the shining sun in the summertime. I think it is clear to the observer what the photographer is trying to communicate. With the soft hues, warm light, and strong focus on the glass and lime its clear the organic nature of this photograph. There is little distraction in this picture. It is clear the focus is on the glass and the lime. This communicates the idea of few distractions during the summer, which makes the season relaxing and something to look forward to!
